Seeing Weimar

Focus on
Seeing Weimar

« During the Weimar Republic, German film experienced perhaps its most innovative period. A great variety of genres emerged, prestigious productions, independently realized experimental and documentary films. Filmmakers of the New German Cinema discovered their role model and new sources of inspiration in this filmmaking in the 1960s and 1970s. The image of this period changed and became more complete in recent decades. The focus has shifted to filmmakers who had received too little attention up until now, such as Gerhard Lamprecht, the founding director of the Deutsche Kinemathek. In addition, new expert restorations made it possible to present many films again in their entirety or at least approximately in their former length for the first time since their premieres at the time - in a picture and sound quality that in some cases had not been perceived for decades. The Deutsche Kinemathek is therefore delighted to be a partner of LaCinetek for the focus "Seeing Weimar". »

- Dr. Rainer Rother, Artistic Director at the Deutsche Kinemathek

In collaboration with the Deutsche Kinemathek, we invite you to rediscover the fantastic creatures of Weimar (vampires, hypnotists, mad scientists, androids), emancipated women and vamps (interpreted by Marlene Dietrich or Louise Brooks) and the innovative cinema of Lang, Murnau, Pabst, Lubitsch, Sternberg and Robert Wiene, among others.
