On New Year&#x27;s Eve, an insecure, struggling actress (Anna Magnani) has nothing to do. When a colleague invites her to a New Year&#x27;s party, she jumps at the opportunity. Accidentally she runs into an old acting acquaintance (Toto), who is helping a professional pickpocket (Ben Gazzara) steal from people during the hustle-bustle of New Year&#x27;s Eve festivities. During the course of the evening, they have numerous crazy, humorous adventures all over Rome at different parties, restaurants, and even the Trevi fountain. Magnani&#x27;s character (Tortorella) falls for Gazzara&#x27;s character (Lello) without knowing what he&#x27;s up to, while Toto tries to placate them both.

Aboard a ship early in the 20th-century, a middle-aged Italian tells his story of love to a Russian. In a series of flashbacks filmed almost entirely in creams, whites, and ochers, the clownish and superfluous Romano Patroni leaves his wife&#x27;s opulent home to visit a spa where he falls in love with a Russian woman whose marriage is a horror. He pursues her into the Russian heartland and returns to Italy resolved to leave his wife and marry his love. His amazed and appreciative Russian listener then narrates a shorter story.

Madame de... must settle her debts, so she sells the earrings that her husband General de... gave her to a jeweller, and then claims she has lost them. In 1944, in Milan, the Germans ask small-time swindler Bertone to pretend to be General Della Rovere, a patriotic hero who has just been killed so they can spy on the resistance fighters. Bertone is then immediately contacted by Bianchelli who, however, is tortured and dies before being able to convey his message. Bertone, overwhelmed by what has just happened, realizes his mistake, refuses to collaborate with the Germans and chooses to die with the other condemned prisoners. Gold Lion, Venice Festival, 1959.
