Middle-aged artistes provide the focus of this drama filmed in black and white. The story is set in Paris around the time of the Gulf War. Paul is an actor leading a drab directionless existence. He has an affair with Ulrika, a woman half his age. His wife, with whom he constantly argues, is pregnant with their second child. He does not interact much with his teenage son. Much of the film centers around the emptiness of his life.

1968 and 1969 in Paris during and after the student and trade-union revolt. 20-year-old Fran&ccedil;ois is a poet dodging military service. He takes to the barricades, but won&#x27;t throw a Molotov cocktail at the police. He smokes opium and talks about revolution with his friend Antoine, who has an inheritance and a flat where Fran&ccedil;ois can stay. Fran&ccedil;ois meets Lilie, a sculptor who works at a foundry to support herself, and they fall in love. A year passes; Fran&ccedil;ois continues to write, talk, smoke, and be with Lilie. Opportunities come to Lilie: what will she and Fran&ccedil;ois do?

Fran&ccedil;ois, a ten-year-old, abandoned child, was entrusted to the foster-care system. He lives with a host family in Lens in northern France: the Joignys who have a daughter, Josette. Fran&ccedil;ois usually gets into trouble and is even cruel to the family cat. Tired of his incontrollable behavior, the Joignys call the special educator and ask him to find a new home for Fran&ccedil;ois. Fran&ccedil;ois is then sent to live with an elderly couple, the Thierrys, the husband of which is a former resistance fighter and a retired miner. At &quot;Gram and Pap&#x27;s,&quot; Fran&ccedil;ois discovers a whole new family with a fifteen-year-old boy, Raoul, who is also a child of the French foster-car system. Fran&ccedil;ois seems to fit into this warm family. Yet once again, he commits new offenses, so he is sent to a rehabilitation center. The Thierrys receive a letter from him, in which he promises to do his best to return home for Christmas.
