Quelque part dans le nord-ouest de l’État de Washington, dans la ville imaginaire de Twin Peaks, le cadavre de la jeune Laura Palmer est retrouvé emballé dans un sac plastique au bord d’une rivière. L’agent du FBI Dale Cooper est désigné pour mener l’enquête et va découvrir que la lycéenne, connue et aimée de tous, avait bien des choses à cacher, tout comme de nombreux habitants de la ville.
