Ulzana, un chef apache, s'évade de sa réserve afin de mener une révolte avec d'autres braves. Les fermes installées sur les anciens territoires indiens sont saccagées. Le jeune lieutenant DeBuin, aidé d'un éclaireur aguerri et désabusé et d'un scout indien, se lance à sa poursuite. Ne parvenant pas à stopper ces carnages, DeBuin cherche à comprendre le sens profond de la révolte d'Ulzana.
