1968. Pendant que Bob combat au Viêt Nam, sa femme Sally s’engage à l’hôpital comme volontaire. Elle y retrouve son amour de lycée, Luke, devenu paraplégique, dont elle retombe amoureuse. Au retour de Bob, Sally devra faire un choix…
Note : Il s’agit de l’un des premiers films à aborder la guerre du Viêt Nam de manière frontale avant Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket ou encore Platoon, et fut récompensé par l’Oscar du meilleur acteur pour Jon Voight, de la meilleure actrice pour Jane Fonda et du meilleur scénario original en 1979.
