En pleine guerre du Pacifique, une troupe américaine est rongée par les conflits internes. Le général de division Cummings est détesté de tous ses hommes en raison de sa cruauté, et se déchire avec le lieutenant Hearn, humaniste et pacifiste. Afin de se débarrasser de Hearn, Cummings décide de le mettre aux commandes d’une patrouille de reconnaissance qui doit explorer les îles japonaises. Hearn sera secondé par le sergent Croft, un homme à la folie guerrière et dangereuse…
