Dans une petite ville du Far West, le shérif McCabe profite d’une existence opulente et ne se soucie guère des problèmes de ses paires. Il est dérangé lors d’une de ses siestes par l’arrivée d’un détachement de cavalerie emmené par le lieutenant Gary. McCabe est sommé de les accompagner dans un campement indien pour tenter de libérer des prisonniers.
