Minnesota, 1929. Veille de la Grande Dépression. Un fils de paysan, Lem Tustine, est envoyé par son père à Chicago pour vendre la dernière récolte de blé. Dans un bar, Lem discute avec sa serveuse, Kate. La jeune fille est malheureuse en ville et rêve d'évasion. Lem s'éprend de la citadine, la demande en mariage et rentre à la campagne en sa compagnie. De retour à la ferme, Kate subit le despotisme des parents du garçon qui ne voient pas son arrivée d'un bon œil.
