1528. Faisant partie des rares rescapés d’un naufrage au large de la Floride, l’explorateur espagnol Cabeza de Vaca est réduit à l’esclavage par un chaman indien dont il va devenir le disciple. Libéré quelques années plus tard, l’explorateur se lance dans une longue errance de la Louisiane au Mexique, durant laquelle il va mettre son apprentissage à l’épreuve et se faire connaître en accomplissant guérisons et miracles...
