Guidé par Théophane le Grec, le moine Andrei Roublev s’engage dans la réalisation d’une fresque dépeignant le « Jugement dernier » pour la cathédrale de Vladimir. Mais l’intrusion des envahisseurs tartares dans le petit village freine bientôt l’enthousiasme du dévot et lui ouvre les yeux sur la cruauté de la Russie du 15ème siècle. Roublev est amené à remettre en question les valeurs d’un Dieu cruel et vengeur. Déçu par les hommes et la condition humaine, tourmenté par des doutes concernant le rôle de l’art et de l’artiste, il décide de faire vœu de silence.
Notes : Andreï Roublev est une évocation très libre de la vie du moine, sur lequel existe peu d’informations historiques. Andreï Tarkovski s’est donc servi de huit tableaux du peintre pour guider son récit. Le réalisateur injecte également une large part d’autobiographie à son film qui au départ devait s’intituler La Passion selon Andreï. Tarkovski s’attache ainsi à décrire et à interroger le rôle de l’artiste face à un état dictatorial.
