Récemment libérée de prison en Russie, Valentina retourne en Estonie à la recherche de son fils Jüri, qu'elle a fait adopter il y a des années. Convaincue que leurs retrouvailles connaîtront un dénouement heureux, Valentina cherche partout jusqu'à ce qu'elle retrouve son fils à Tartu, adopté par une famille aisée. La réconciliation s'avère plus difficile que prévu.
