Juli, une ouvrière hongroise et mère célibatère, entretient une relation avec son contremaître Janos. Lorsqu’elle tombe enceinte, Janos accepte de l’épouser. Cependant, son autorité oppressante pousse Juli a le quitter. Elle préfère poursuivre sa grossesse seule et est prête à en assumer le prix, pour maintenir son autonomie.
