Atom Egoyan

Atom Egoyan

  • Canadian director, born in Cairo in 1960.

Born to Armenian parents, his family emigrated to Canada when he was two years old. Passionate about theatre, he wrote several plays before directing short films while studying. In 1984, he shot his first feature film, Next of Kin, followed by Family Viewing in 1987. He fulfilled his dream of filming in Armenia with Calendar (1993); Ararat (2002) is a meditation on the Armenian genocide. In 1994, Exotica won the FIPRESCI Critics’ Prize at Cannes and earned him international fame. His adaptation of Russell Banks’s novel The Sweet Hereafter earned him the Grand Prize at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, as well as two Oscar nominations. He explores themes of loneliness and alienation in his films Captives (2014), Remember (2015) and Guest of honor (2019). Alongside his career as an opera director, he depicts the world of the stage through the story of a theater director in Seven Veils (2023).
